The Hairy Universe of Handstripping – small cosmetic damage

The Hairy Universe of Handstripping is a place where coats have cycles, hair has a purpose, and not all grooming is created equal. It takes you on a journey through one of the least understood — yet essential — techniques of coat care, best approached calmly, with curiosity (and possibly a towel).

About one-third of officially registered breeds — and many popular mixes — require handstripping to maintain healthy coats and skin. Yet it remains one of the most misunderstood and myth-filled areas of dog grooming. Is it painful? Is it cruel? Is it even necessary? This book replaces the rumours with science, clarity and practical know-how.

It explains the why as well as the how: the genetics of different coats, the science behind hair growth, and what happens when you strip — or don’t. You’ll discover how wire and silky coats grow, why handstripping exists, which tools and details really matter, and when it’s time to start — or stop.

Step-by-step techniques, tool guidance, timing advice and breed-specific tips are included, with common myths debunked along the way.

This is not a book about breed-specific styling; it guides you in understanding the technique itself. Once you know the why and how, then it’s much easier to start creating specific hairstyles.

Whether you’re grooming for a living, learning the craft, or simply trying to do the best for your own dog, this book is your guide through the hairy universe. A sense of humour helps — and don’t panic.

This is a hardback book measuring 18 cm x 25 cm, with 293 pages, mostly of which are printed in colour.
The book also includes access to 9 videos with additional content and a knowledge base containing answers to questions that may arise during your handstripping journey.
